AUDE /ARIEGE

The area encompasses the beaches of the Mediterranean, the wine areas of the Corbieres and Limoux, to the foothills of the Pyrenees. It is a place of impossible castles, perched like Disney cartoons on top of rocky crags, which were once used as outposts, forts and places of haven at various times of their history.

There are wonderful caves, Mas d'Azil, Niaux, Lombrives, Bedeilhac, all where prehistoric man left behind traces of his life and beliefs through handprints, cave paintings and ancient artefacts. Then one can enjoy all the advantages of mountainous areas, lush meadow of wild flowers, skiing, walking, horse riding, cycling, rafting and other outdoor pursuits. One can visit the underground river ( the largest in Europe) at Labouiche.

Whether one is sunbathing on the terrace, visiting the local markets or sampling the local wines, this is a delightful region that one can enjoy and relax in. It might be a good time to visit the towns of Mirepoix, Quillan, Esperaza,Limoux, Rennes les Bains, Pamiers, Carcassonne, Beziers or Narbonne - all full of history.
